Can you hard-code the ports to different link speeds/duplex modes, maybe
setting the switch to 100/full and your device to 100/half? I know that
an old Solaris bug where the hme interfaces wouldn't negotiate their
settings correctly would often lead to this scenario and we'd get tons
of errors on the interface. You should be able to replicate with the
ethtool.
