I've been down this path too, esp since I'm not a mysql admin in real
life.  I found that the following to be helpful:

  mysqlreport
  mysqlsla-2.03

and of course looking at the slow queries log.  

I'm busy right now, but feel free to poke me over the weekend and I'll
see if I can dig up some more notes if you like.
