It would be more proper to say that OSX, FreeBSD, and NetBSD share a 
common ancestry and are in essence cousins, having descended from BSD 
4.3. OSX more directly descends from BSD 4.3 via NeXTStep/OpenStep, 
where it was reimplemented on top of the Mach microkernel, which was 
developed for the NeXT boxes and is where the idea of taking the typical 
text data of things like passwd, etc. and putting them into a form of 
database started for OSX. OSX took some of the developments from both 
FreeBSD and NetBSD into itself, so there is some cross-pollination as well.
