We bought one at my previous job. I sent various bits of mail about it
to lopsa-discuss, but here's my recollections about it:
Early hardware chassis had a bad sata cable. This caused the units
to detect the drives as bad. Their support group would happily send
us a new drive, but was generally useless at solving the
problem. ("you sent us this drive yesterday, don't you think the
problem might be somewhere else?") We finally got it fixed going
through our sales contact to get to a product manager.
The storevault support division is completely separate from the
normal netapp one. And, when I was using them, not very good. (see
above)
The storevault is running a somewhat tweaked ontap. The version we
had, we could ssh into and run the normal ontap commands. But this
was *unsupported* and they weren't very happy with us for it.
Though it worked, I probably wouldn't buy one again. It felt like
netapp hamstrung it to encourage people to buy up market. Not only did
I run into some of the software deficiencies, but it's just hard to
respect that as a product.
