<u><b>Team Leader, Research Data Services</b></u><br>
<br>
The Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT seeks a Team Lead for the
Research Data Services group within the IT/Systems organization.
Reporting to the Manager of Research Computing, this new and
challenging role will be responsible for the delivery of data
storage and database services to the Broad community as well as the
day-to-day operations of the physical infrastructure supporting
those services. The successful candidate will bring a combination of
technical, leadership and business skills and will play a key role
in the success of the Institute’s new internal service center
delivering data storage as a service.<br>

The Broad generates enormous volumes of scientific data. The
Institute’s network data stores have grown 50-fold in the past five
years alone. The storage infrastructure now comprises more than 10
petabytes of network-attached storage and a large storage-area
network supporting almost 50 Oracle database instances as well as a
number of MySQL and other RDBMS systems. <br>

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY<br>
<br>
Responsibilities of this role fall into three areas:<br>
<br>
Delivery of data services<br>
• As lead of the service center providing data storage and related
services, help drive the successful establishment of this new
internal business<br>
• Continually review and refine data service offerings and
coordinate with Cost Analysis and Business Systems groups in the
development of associated cost-recovery models<br>
• Maintain ongoing engagement with Broad research community to
ensure satisfaction with service offerings and service delivery<br>
• Play a driving role in the ongoing identification and evaluation
of new storage and database technologies<br>

Storage and database operations<br>
• Ensure effective and reliable operation of the storage and data
infrastructure<br>
• Manage support and service contracts and coordinate with vendor
field service staff as required<br>
• Collect metrics of storage service availability and performance<br>
• Implement appropriate configuration change management and
documentation procedures<br>
• Plan and implement appropriate hardware life cycle management
practices<br>

Team leadership<br>
• Manage storage administration and database engineering teams for
maximum performance<br>
• Ensure appropriate cross training on storage and database
technologies within the teams to maintain reliable coverage<br>
• Develop and maintain a professional development plan with each
team member<br>
• Collaborate with other members of the IT management team in
defining and achieving the overall goals of the IT organization<br>

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES<br>
<br>
• Review and respond to requests for data storage and related
services<br>
• Coordinate with Business Systems staff to ensure timely creation
of service contracts and regular reporting of service delivery
efforts<br>
• Coordinate with grant administrators to support budgeting for
grant proposals and to address billing questions<br>
• Monitor status of physical storage infrastructure and ensure
prompt response to hardware and software issues<br>
• Manage performance of team members<br>
• Other tasks as required <br>
<br>
SUPERVISION EXERCISED<br>
<br>
• Directly supervises three storage Systems Administrators and three
Database Administrators <br>
• Oversees the activity of permanent on-site storage hardware field
service technicians<br>
<br>
<br>
QUALIFICATIONS<br>
<br>
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or other technical
discipline and plus 7-10 years of directly related professional
experience including 3-5 years in supervisory roles with increasing
responsibility; Master’s degree preferred<br>
• Solid understanding of SAN and NAS technologies<br>
• Working knowledge of RDBMS technologies including Oracle and MySQL<br>
• Strong customer service orientation<br>
• Familiarity with delivering IT services in an academic or
scientific research organization highly desired<br>
• Excellent leadership and exceptional verbal and written
communication skills<br>
• Working knowledge of file storage/sharing technologies including
NFS, SAN, CIFS and network (LAN routing, subnets) <br>
• Must be able to communicate effectively with technical and
non-technical audiences<br>
• Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and
in a team environment<br>
• Excellent time management and organizational skills<br>
<br>
