Smarter Travel Media is looking for a Senior Systems
Administrator to join our small systems team within a growing engineering
department of the Trip Advisor Media Network. You’ll participate in
architecting, automating, and troubleshooting our full LAMPhp + Tomcat web
stack and get to work with some of the latest technologies (like Puppet and
Hadoop) in a laid back, fun environment with some of the best techies in the
country. If this sounds like a good fit, email me—I’m the hiring
manager.

On a day to day basis you'll be responsible for:

* Automating configuration and monitoring with Puppet and scripting languages
across several hundred servers in twenty service clusters across three
datacenters
* Responding to the on-call pager in a two-person rotation and keeping the
complete solution stack up and running for some of the largest travel sites in
the world with close to ten million impressions a day
* Optimizing our multi-terabyte MySQL and Hadoop datastores
* Helping developers scale their creations in performance and reliability

Benefits:

* Generous compensation program with annual bonus
* Summer half-Fridays, snack Fridays, and casual work environment
* Access to great health insurance and gym reimbursement
* 3 weeks of vacation to start with awesome travel discounts and reimbursements
* Professional development—we have given two conference talks on our 2010
work
* 30” monitor, laptop with 3g, and free Ipod when you start

You'd be a good fit for this role if you have:

* An extensive background in Linux configuration and troubleshooting for 24/7
mission-critical applications; web experience preferred
* At least CCNA-equivalent understanding of networking (certification not
expected), but more extensive knowledge at all OSI layers would be helpful
* Strong knowledge of Ruby or Python and BASH (Puppet desired, not
required)
* Strong written, oral, and numeric communication skills
* Willingness to cover for other positions as needed, learn new technologies
quickly, negotiate for what you need, mentor others, and be responsible for
complete solutions
* Strong database background, with high volume MySQL or HBase a plus

You will also be expected to help cover for Windows helpdesk absences and rack
and stack server hardware over 40 pounds, but those will not be major
components of your job.
