Folks,
My employer, a financial services company in downtown Boston is looking for
a well-rounded IT professional with 3-6 (give or take) years of experience
working in a small or medium-size, but fast-moving IT organization. Ideal
skill-set should include linux system administration skills and network
administration skills. Ideally:
Lunux SA:
Install, configure linux OS (different flavors), understand and know the
differences in the sa toolset between RH, Debian and other distributions
via cd and remote boot
Able to troubleshoot interface configuration problems, host connectivity
configuration problems -
Able to configure and manage file systems on lInux.
Able to install, apply basic configuration and troubleshoot standard
Linux-based applications, such as bind or djbdns, LDAP server, NFS and SAMBA
Be familiar with setup and configuration of git, svn or other repositories
Familiarity with SNMP v3, syslog and other monitoring tools and protocols
with some hands-on experience setting up these tools to monitor different
aspects of host operations.
Familiarity one or more automated systems management tools, such as puppet,
clonzilla, foreman, etc.
Basic hands-on experience with VMWare: setting up hosts, guest OS,
administering storage, performing these tasks via GUI and command-line.
Basic shell scripting skills
Network Admin:
Have a basic/fundamental (but not rudimentary) understanding of networking,
including classless sub netting, etc, TCP/IP, Ethernet
Have basic operational knowledge of Cisco switches: interface
configurations, password recovery, IOS upgrade procedures
Have basic operational understanding of Cisco IOS workings, i.e. the
ability to look at Cisco swich/router configuration and describe what it
does…
Have basic understanding of how ACLs, prefix-lists, route-maps work on
Cisco, and how they could be used to control data flows.
Have a basic understanding of NAT implementations in IOS.
Have a basic knowledge of Cisco security products (ASA) and peculiarities
of their configurations, including NAT and VPNs.
Now, since we don’t live in a perfect world, I do understand that finding
such folks is a very difficult task, although I’ve successfully located and
hired them it in the past. We are not looking for expert knowledge of
everything on the list. We are looking for someone who touched if not all,
but most of technologies mentioned, and wants to expend the knowledge.
Someone who had to resolve an ins sue and then said: “let me read a book on
how it works”; someone who said: “I don’t know how to do it, but give me a
few hours, days weeks (whatever is appropriate) and I will figure it out”.
And did just that. If you want to focus on one side – awesome, as long as
you keep up the other side as well…. We have a few interesting, complex and
exiting projects starting, and looking for help implementing them.
A few things about the company: we are small (13 people), profitable,
growing, have big plans. We are located in one of the tall buildings on
Boston’s waterfront, and will be moving into a beautiful, spacious new
office (currently being built in the same building) soon. This person will
be working in my group. Feel free to reach out with any questions. If you
know someone personally, who fits the description and is interested, please
forward him/her the job description and my email. Please do not distribute
this post outside of this list.
Thank you, Paul Zotov.
