Job Description:

Smarter Travel Media is looking for a seasoned Linux systems administrator to keep our collection of travel websites up and running.
The specific responsibilities for the Senior Systems Administrator are:

-Build, rack, monitor, and repair server hardware
-Automate server configurations for all roles, products, and environments
-Configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize MySQL and Hadoop datastores
-Configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize PHP and Java web application servers
-Responsible for keeping the complete solution stack up and running
-Respond to the on-call pager in a two-person rotation
-Respond to on-call escalations as needed when not on paid time off
-Cover for Windows helpdesk absences
-Assist with configuration of windows servers and wired / wireless networks
-Make, understand, and troubleshoot firewall and load balancer changes
-Mentor junior sysadmins and developers
-Specify and negotiate hardware and service purchases

The successful candidate will possess the following minimum knowledge, skills and experience:
-Has successfully "owned" a production Linux Internet environment and is looking for a similar challenge again. This includes:

   - redundant database servers
   - multiple, load balanced application servers
   - remote monitoring and management
   - at least 100Mbps of regular traffic

Also:

-Extensive background in Linux configuration and troubleshooting
-At least CCNA-equivalent understanding of networking
-Ability to rack server hardware, lifting up to 40#
-Strong written, oral, and numeric communication skills
-Available to travel periodically to New York City data center
-Experience with Linux bash scripting, and similar languages such as Perl
Desired:

-Strong MySQL background, including multi-master replication and storage engine optimization
-Strong networking background, including FOSS and Cisco experience at all layers of the OSI stack
-Experience in a Windows Server/Active Directory/Exchange environment
-Experience with Asterisk in a call center environment
-Experience building open source software from RPMS
-Experience creating custom RPM files for local deployment
